Authorities: Indonesia AirAsia flight lost

first_imgIndonesia authorities have declared the Indonesia AirAsia A320 operating flight QZ8501 from Surabaya to Singapore with 162 aboard which went missing Sunday as lost at the bottom of the Java Sea.Sightings by the crew of an Australian plane, a P3 Orion, of suspicious objects 1,100km from where contact was lost the Indonesia AirAsia aircraft are not believed to be from the A320. Today Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency chief Bambang Soelistyo told a press conference that “based on the coordinates given to us and evaluation that the estimated crash position is in the sea, the hypothesis is the plane is at the bottom of the sea.” A multinational search and rescue team has so far failed to find any confirmed trace of the flight despite 12 ships, three helicopters and seven planes scouring an area 220 km south east of Belitung Island in the Java Sea where radar contact was lost.Severe weather impact is thought to be responsible for the apparent loss of the six year old aircraft.A leaked radar screenshot from AirNav Indonesia, the air traffic controller, obtained by AirlineRatings.com shows that the A320 had critically lost 200km/hour in ground airspeed in a matter of minutes and it could no longer sustain flight at the altitude it was flying. The forecast winds at 32,000ft were for a tailwind of about 30km/hour, although that could have changed significantly. However other aircraft in the vicinity were travelling at normal speeds. Air traffic controllers lost contact with the A320 just five minutes after crew requested a deviation of their flight route to avoid storms. One minute after that the transponder signals disappeared indicating a catastrophic failure. An experienced A320 captain told AirlineRatings.com that the crew may have been deceived by the aircraft’s radar, which was not the latest model available. However the plane’s commander Captain Iriyanto was a 20,537 veteran of which 6100 hours was with Indonesia Air Asia. The co-pilot was Rémi Emmanuel Plesel, who had a total of 2,275 flying hours with AirAsia Indonesia.According to the Indonesia Ministry of Transport the plane took off at a takeoff weight of 63,624kg under its maximum of 70,796kg.In shades of the initial search for MH370 which disappeared on March 8, it was revealed yesterday that it was almost one hour after contact was lost with QZ8501 that an “aircraft position uncertain” alert was issued and a full 98 minutes before a distress alert was declared by air traffic control.Indonesia’s Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said that thunderstorms were detected up to 13,400 metres in the same area at the time the A320 was reported to have lost contact.Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and Australia are involved in the search and rescue operation.last_img read more

Afcon 2013 ‘will be a success’: LOC

first_img13 November 2012Despite budget limitations and a tight schedule, the local organising committee (LOC) for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) is confident that South Africa will pull off a successful tournament. The Afcon tournament starts at Johannesburg’s FNB Stadium on Saturday, 19 January, when Bafana Bafana face Cape Verde in the opening match, and ends on 10 February.A three-man LOC delegation, including chairperson Mwelo Nonkonyana and CEO Mvuzo Mbebe, briefed Parliament’s portfolio committee on sport and recreation in Cape Town on Tuesday on the country’s readiness to host the championship to decide Africa’s premier football nation.“There may be areas where we’ll have to tighten the belt. But I can assure the country that we are going to do a good job,” Mbebe said. One such measure is that LOC board members are not taking salaries or allowances.According to a summary of its budget, the LOC expects an income of R335 200 860, of which an amount of R205 043 200 represents grants from various government departments. Total expenses are forecast to total R334 667 721, with a surplus of R534 139 projected.Mbebe told the committee that the LOC was acutely aware of the enormous responsibility it carried. “We hosted the [2010 Fifa] World Cup and got nine out of ten. We don’t want less than that for Afcon.”‘Full stadiums’ the aimMbebe said the LOC had set itself some goals, chief among which was getting the nation behind the tournament – and into the stadiums. “We need everybody’s support to do everything in our power to make sure that the stadiums are full.”Tickets for the competition went on sale in September. Sales have been brisk. “The response from the public has been phenomenal to a certain extent. We are not doing too badly,” Mbebe said.In the first phase of the sales drive, the LOC had anticipated that 10 000 tickets would be sold. But a total of 19 966 tickets were snapped up by fans. Currently, between 1 200 and 1 500 tickets are being sold daily.Buoyed by the manner in which soccer fans are buying tickets, Mbebe was optimistic that by 20 December, a total of 350 000 tickets, or 70 percent of all tickets, would have been sold.Bafana BafanaAsked how Bafana Bafana’s performance would affect ticket sales, he said that the LOC was encouraging fans to support the national team as South Africans, but also to support teams playing in each of the host cities.Mbebe said that, unlike at the 2010 World Cup, teams would be based in the cities they had chosen as their bases until they were knocked out of the competition. He said attendance in Durban might be affected if South Africa was knocked out of the competition in the quarterfinals. The portfolio committee chairman, Richard Mdakane, said: “We hope that Bafana Bafana won’t let us down. It will be important for Bafana to win it. All South Africans will be happier generally if they see their team win.”Enthusiasm was also big among volunteers. A call for volunteers to help during the tournament was expected to be answered by 5 000, but 26 000 people had responded. The committee was assured that safety and security was a priority.Further, in an effort to thwart corruption, the referees will be secluded in a hotel near Pretoria, “where nobody will have access to them”. The referees will leave this venue escorted by security officials a day before match day.“It’s a credibility and security issue,” Mbebe said.Source: SANews.gov.zalast_img read more

Bailout bill leaves a one-year gap, with no available tax credits for work performed in 2008

first_imgNew Tax Credits For Residential Energy Improvements Will Be Available for 2009 WorkWASHINGTON, DC — The $700 billion bank bailout bill signed into law by President Bush in October 2008 included a renewal of the homeowner energy-efficiency tax credits originally established in August 2005. (These tax credits were available to homeowners who performed air-sealing work, installed Energy Star windows, installed insulation, or bought an efficient furnace or air conditioner in 2006 and 2007.) While the new bill reinstates tax credits for work performed in 2009, it leaves a one-year gap, with no available tax credits for work performed in 2008. “Congress really left a doughnut hole with this kind of language,” commented Steven Nadel, the executive director of the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy. “The package was getting too expensive, so they were trying to find out ways to cut the cost.” Tyson Slocum, director of the energy program at Public Citizen, a nonprofit advocacy group, was more blunt. “While Congress was opening up the federal checkbook to provide up to a trillion dollars to Wall Street, they were extremely militant about keeping the cost down of tax breaks for households,” said Slocum. For work performed in 2009, however, homeowners can receive the following tax credits:Up to $150 for a new efficient furnace.Up to $500 for 10% of the cost of air-sealing materials, new insulation, new exterior doors, or new reflective roofing.Up to $300 for a new efficient central air conditioner, heat pump, water heater, or certain biomass stoves.Up to $200 for 10% of the cost of new Energy Star windows. The maximum tax credit per household is $500. For more information, visit www.ase.org/taxcredits. ANALYSISFor those who care about energy efficiency, the federal tax credit program looks like a very blunt instrument indeed. The program shows all the signs of having been drafted by manufacturers’ lobbyists, not energy experts. Why else is a credit provided for window replacement, a measure that is almost never cost-effective? The window replacement tax credit will do more to line the pockets of window manufacturers than participating homeowners. A truly effective program would provide tax credits for home energy audits and air-sealing work; but since the cost of these measures is mostly labor, they are excluded from the tax-credit program, which covers material costs only. (Bizarrely, a taxpayer can claim a credit for 10% of the cost of any tubes of caulk used to perform air-sealing work, but can’t claim a credit for the cost of the labor to find air leaks — an absurd provision that appears to be propelled by the needs of caulk manufacturers, not logic.)last_img read more

Not only does he continue to head a dozen important government committees but is now on a hectic tour of India’s neighbours including Pakistan and the ASEAN summit at Cebu to promote India’s foreign relations. Before he left, he sat down for an hourlong interview with INDIA TODAY Editor Prabhu Chawla and Associate Editor Saurabh shukla in the executive drawing room of South Block. Excerpts from the interview:Q. As part of your tour of India’s neighbours you would also be making your first visit to Pakistan as foreign minister. What is your agenda?A. I am going to Pakistan, firstly, to extend an invitation to President Musharraf to attend the 14th SAARC Summit. That is the official purpose. And surely we will not discuss the weather, we will discuss issues which are there. We will discuss SAFTA. With all other SAARC countries, tariff reduction has been finalised. But with Pakistan this has to be done still. Similarly, we would also like to review at the foreign ministers’ level the third round of Composite Dialogue that just got over.Q. The biggest impediment to the peace process is the issue of terrorism. Will you be seeking an assurance from General Pervez Musharraf that all terrorist acts against India will stop?A. The assurance was obtained by Atal Bihari Vajpayee on January 6, 2004. President Musharraf assured him that Pakistani territory or Pakistani-dominated territory will not be allowed to be used by terrorists. The question is not of assurance; the question is how these assurances are actually implemented.Q. You said General Musharraf’s promises on terrorist camps are not being implemented. You used the word “unconvincing”.A. What I stated is that infrastructure of launching terrorists has not been dismantled. His (Musharraf’s) pledges have not been implemented.Q. But do you think that the peace process will be affected if terrorism continues from across the border?A. That is the issue which has been flagged at the foreign secretary-level meeting. We will flag it again.”Infrastructure for launching terrorists has not been dismantled. We will flag the issue during the talks.”Q. Do you think we can trust Musharraf now?A. We have to deal with the head of a state. The basic presumption would be that we would trust each other.Q. What about Jammu & Kashmir? Do you have any package solution?A. I don’t have any readymade solution.Q. But are we discussing a Kashmir solution on the lines of the four-point formula that General Musharraf has been suggesting?A. We are trying to resolve the issue of Kashmir in the context of Shimla Agreement, Lahore Declaration, and the series of talks which have taken place; we are having a composite dialogue of which resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir issue is a part. In that context we are going to discuss it. These are the issues that have been raised from time to time and the responses are there; you have heard the response of the prime minister in Amritsar.Q. Are your allies constraining you on foreign policy choices, be it Sri Lanka, the US or Iran? Your allies are dictating foreign policy choices now.A. No, not at all.Q. But you have to do a lot of explaining to them.A. Yes, as I have explained to my Left allies, I have equally explained it to the BJP leaders. Because parliamentary democracy demands that when there is a broad consensus in respect of foreign policy we should try to maintain that consensus. Keeping that in view, we apprised them of the developments which took place in our neighbourhood.Q. There have been reservations over the Indo-US nuclear deal. Even the scientists have opposed the deal.A. No, only a section of scientists have opposed it. They have expressed their concerns. But these concerns will not be ignored.Q. So are you saying that you will go for 123 agreement only if those concerns are taken care of?A. Of course, that is the commitment we have made.Q. Are you also saying that in the current form the deal will not go through, unless your concerns are sorted out?A. Unless certain issues are taken care of, certain concerns are addressed, it would not be possible for us to go with it.Q. The Congress is heading a coalition for the first time since Independence. So is handling coalition conflicts a major problem?A. Of course, running a coalition government in a country like India is a difficult task. More so when Congress leads the coalition, since most of the political parties were anti-Congress. To have a coalition, to run a coalition government, you require a lot of adjustments, a lot of flexibility. But the success of the coalition Government to a great extent is the contribution of UPA Chairperson and Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.Q. You could have done better if it was only a Congress-led government?A. That would be a value judgement right now because we do not have the majority.Q. But have you also compromised on your ideology?A. Sometimes compromise is not bad. Sometimes absolute power creates problems. There is an old saying that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.Q. Don’t you think that most national political parties are getting marginalised? Rather, people are looking up to industrialists and entrepreneurs.A. I would not put this as marginalisation of politicians or political system. I would put it as the recognition of other sections. Earlier it was monopolised by politicians only. Now there are other sections of the society- industry, sports, academics, judiciary- which are important too. They too have roles to play.Q. Your 1991-96 economic policies and the present ones are almost the same. But you lost the election then.A. Compare my Budget of 1982 with Manmohan Singh’s Budget of 1991. The policies which I proposed were almost the same but Indian industry strongly resisted my proposal for NRI portfolio investment. In 1991 it was welcomed because conditions had changed.Q. In the reforms process, you have not been able to fulfill certain things like FDI in telecom and insurance. Labour reforms are also stuck. Is it because of coalition compulsions?A. We have done whatever was possible through the administrative route. But where you require legislative support, you need the backing of others.Q. Has the Left been more of a hindrance than an asset for you?A. No, not at all. We are getting the support of all their 60 members solidly.Q. But you are paying a price for it.A. For everything, you have to pay a price. You are not running a single-party government.Q. You have always been the number one minister. Weren’t you upset when Manmohan Singh, whom you once appointed as RBI governor, became prime minister?A. I am neither number one nor number two. I am just one of them.Q. Don’t you have prime ministerial ambitions?A. Thank you for coming.advertisementadvertisementlast_img read more

We Calculated Advanced Stats For The Congressional Baseball Game

The 2020 field is good at baseballDemocratic presidential candidates’ statistics in the Congressional Baseball Game, 2009-2018 Tim Ryan8.500.560.6364/00.27 Jay Inslee3.545.545.5450/00.08 A fierce political free-for-all will be waged on Wednesday night — but it has nothing to do with the Democratic presidential debate.Under the lights at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., Republican and Democratic members of Congress will don their uniforms and take the field to play in the annual Congressional Baseball Game. The event may be for a good cause, but it’s also a serious athletic contest: Bones have been broken in past games, and pitches have been clocked as high as 80 miles per hour. This year, Republican congressmen got up at 6 a.m. two to three times a week to train for the game under the tutelage of former pros including Darrell Evans. (It was at such a practice two years ago that a gunman opened fire on the Republican team, injuring then-Majority Whip Steve Scalise and three others.)The Republicans may be practicing extra hard this year in an effort to catch up to the dominance of the Democratic team, which has won nine of the past 10 matchups. That’s thanks largely to the fact that Democrats have the seven players with the most wins above replacement over that span.Wait, what? That’s right — the sabermetric revolution has reached the halls of Congress. Using the game’s official box scores, I’ve calculated advanced stats for all members of Congress to play in the game since 2009.1WAR, and all statistics in that spreadsheet, are calculated based on the formulas in the FanGraphs library. The linear weights used to calculate Weighted On-Base Average are those originally developed by Tom Tango. Unfortunately, the data is insufficient to calculate certain metrics, with the main consequence being that my version of WAR is incomplete — there is no defensive component, nor does it factor in baserunning outside of stolen bases (i.e., Ultimate Base Running and Weighted Grounded into Double Play Runs). That includes on-base plus slugging, adjusted earned run average, batting average on balls in play … and, yes, WAR, the sabermetric statistic of choice for totaling up a player’s value on all sides of the ball. And while most players haven’t played enough to accrue a significant number of WAR, some players’ talent does shine through. Rep. Cedric Richmond is such a talent. The Democrat from Louisiana has amassed 2.5 WAR in just eight games. That would work out to 50 WAR in a 162-game season; in other words, Richmond is like Mike Trout combined with Max Scherzer — if Scherzer pitched every single game. Richmond was the starting pitcher for the Dems in all eight games he’s played, finishing seven of them2Congressional Baseball Games last seven innings instead of the usual nine. and striking out 25.4 percent of batters. He has a 2.20 ERA and a 35 ERA-minus (i.e., his ERA is 65 percent better than league average). But he is also the best hitter in the game, with a .652/.758/1.087 slash line and the game’s only home run in the past 10 years.Democrats also claim most of the game’s next-best players, although several of them will not be on the active roster for this year’s game. Former Rep. Joe Baca (0.4 WAR in 14 innings pitched and seven plate appearances) was ousted from Congress by fellow Democrat Gloria Negrete McLeod in 2012 after his California district was redrawn in 2011; former Rep. Tim Bishop (.500/.684/.583) lost his seat on Long Island to Republican Lee Zeldin in 2014.The Democrats’ best active players, other than Richmond, are probably Reps. Pete Aguilar and Jimmy Panetta of California. They are far behind Richmond in WAR (0.2 and 0.1, respectively), but they’ve also had a fraction of his plate appearances. Their OPS marks of 1.470 and 1.5503Small-sample-size caveats apply, although I will say that it doesn’t take very many at-bats for players’ true skills to be exposed in this league. suggest that they are in his league talent-wise.Rep. Linda Sánchez, who owns a .944 OPS, is both one of the Democrats’ best players and one of only two women on the 2019 roster.4The other is Nanette Diaz Barragán. A handful of women have played in the Congressional Baseball Game since 1993, when Reps. Maria Cantwell, Blanche Lambert and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen together broke the game’s gender barrier, but the Congressional Women’s Softball Game is more popular with female legislators. Last week, the press team defeated the congressional team in the 11th iteration of the CWSG.5Unfortunately, we don’t have statistics for the CWSG.The best Republican baseball player has been Texas Rep. Kevin Brady. The 64-year-old is the game’s grizzled veteran, having played since 1997, his first year in Congress. In the past 10 contests, he has put up a .996 OPS and 0.2 WAR. An honorable mention goes to North Carolina Rep. Mark Walker, the GOP’s starting pitcher in the past four games. He has just a 6.46 ERA, but that’s actually about average (104 ERA-minus) in the high-scoring run environment of the Congressional Baseball Game. But because my stats are only for past games, they obviously don’t measure rookie talent. And Republicans think they can level the playing field a bit this year with freshman Rep. Anthony Gonzalez — that’s the same Anthony Gonzalez who played five years for the Indianapolis Colts. However, Democrats will trot out a secret weapon of their own: freshman Rep. Colin Allred, who played four years for the Tennessee Titans and was a star baseball player in high school.Gonzalez and Allred will be far from the only former pros to play in the Congressional Baseball Game. The game was founded in 1909 by former Republican Rep. John Tener, who pitched in the majors from 1888 to 1890. In 1986, Republicans thought they scored a coup when now-Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Bunning was elected to Congress, but he gave up seven runs in two innings in the next year’s game; his nonathlete catcher couldn’t glove his curveball, and the 55-year-old’s fastball lacked its prior zip. Former Rep. Steve Largent, the football Hall of Famer, was far more effective for the GOP; he went 5-1 with a 2.44 ERA in six starts from 1995 to 2001.Some big political names have played in the game as well. Before the 2017 shooting, Scalise, one of the highest-ranking members to ever play the game, had reached base in three of his four career plate appearances and stolen two bases; he returned to the game briefly last year, throwing a runner out from second base on the first play of the game and being mobbed by his teammates. In 2015, Sen. Rand Paul became the first active presidential candidate ever to play in the game; he’s got a .615 OPS for his career. (Rand plays in the game as a tribute to his father, Ron, who in 1979 hit one of the only over-the-fence home runs in Congressional Baseball Game history.) Even former Rep. Anthony Weiner took one at-bat back in 2009; as he did at politics, he struck out. Finally, it turns out there’s a ton of baseball talent in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary field. Jay Inslee, Beto O’Rourke, Tim Ryan and Eric Swalwell all played during their congressional careers — and most of them played well. Eric Swalwell5.250.250.2509/00.08 Beto O’Rourke1.000.000.0000/0-0.03 *WAR does not include baserunning other than stolen bases.Source: Congressional Baseball Game box scores PlayerGAVGOBPSLGSB/CSOffensive WAR* In fact, the presidential bids of Ryan and Swalwell have been big blows to the Democratic baseball team. Both are still in Congress, and Ryan’s bat and Swalwell’s speed have been big assets to Democrats in the past several games. But with the first Democratic primary debates scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday in Miami, they are both apparently skipping the bout this year. read more

Lenglet Dembele is not restless at Barcelona

first_imgBarcelona defender Clement Lenglet insists fellow Frenchman Ousmane Dembele remains fully committed to the clubThe Catalan giants signed Dembele in 2017 from Borussia Dortmund for a staggering €105m deal following a stunning season in the Bundesliga. However, life in Catalonia has not gone smoothly for Dembele with injury problems and a lack of opportunities spoiling his debut campaign. And things don’t appear to be improving for Dembele after failing to make manager Ernesto Valverde’s squad last Sunday, which saw Barcelona suffer a shock 4-3 home defeat to Real Betis.Valverde’s decision to omit Dembele came after his absence in a training session last week. The 21-year-old has only started two of his last five matches for Barcelona now, but Lenglet is certain there are no problems at Camp Nou.Sergio Ramos, Real MadridZidane reveals Sergio Ramos injury concern for Real Madrid Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Zinedine Zidane has put Sergio Ramos’ availability for Real Madrid’s trip to Sevilla next weekend in doubt after withdrawing him against Levante.“If Dembele looked serious in the stands I think that is understandable,” Lenglet told Goal on Dembele’s behaviour.“We were losing and if he started to laugh people would not understand that either.“I don’t think there is any problem with him, he was ill, he couldn’t make training and the coach chose another player.“These are things that happen at every club and we all have to pull in the same direction to reach our goals.”Barcelona will return to action on November 24 in a La Liga game away to third-place Atletico Madrid.last_img read more
