Kolkata: Tension sparked of at the NRS Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday when nursing staff members of various government-run hospitals and medical colleges staged demonstrations on the hospital campus to press for various demands.The nursing staff members refused to withdraw their agitation despite repeated appeals from senior police officers deployed outside the hospital. The demands include a hike in the salary of the nurses and filling up the vacant posts in nursing. It becomes extremely difficult for the nurses to provide desired treatment to the patients due to a shortage in the staff strength, said the agitating nurses. They also demanded that their salary should be hiked at par with the Centre. They also took out a rally with an intention to submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister. The police stopped the rally. A representative of the agitating nursing staff members later decided to visit the Chief Minister’s office to submit the memorandum. Police officer conducted a campaign by using microphones in the NRS Hospital not to stage demonstration as they had no prior permission.
