first_imgTODAY IS NATIONAL Fish and Chips day and over 200,000 people are expected to visit their local chipper to celebrate! The national day was created by the Irish Traditional Italian Chippers Association (ITICA) five years ago to celebrate the tradition of fish & chips.Over 180 ITICA members will offer half price fish and chips to mark the occasion. The association also carried out a survey to mark the day and find out more about our relationship with fish and chips. It found that 83 per cent of respondents are planning to mark today with a ‘one and one’ at their local ITICA chipper. When asked about the best part of the fish and chips experience over half of respondents said it was the ‘first delicious mouthful’ while 24 per cent love the ‘intoxicating aroma’ of vinegar soaked chips.A recount may be needed to find a winner between chunky chips soaked in vinegar or the crispy bits left at the bottom of the bag.Opinion was spilt with 40 per cent going for the chunky chips and 40 per cent for the crispy bits. One fifth were unable to choose between them!On the subject of accompaniments, 60 per cent claim they would never eat fish and chips without any salt, vinegar and/or ketchup. While 38 per cent said they would if they absolutely had to and a minority of 2 per cent claim that they’ve never added anything to their fish and chips.Read: 7 reasons the Irish chipper is a culinary marve>Read: Could you be the face of chippers in Ireland?>last_img
