ESPN Analyst: ‘Stop The Excuses’ For Alabama’s Blowout Loss To Clemson

first_img McFarland says that if you ask Nick Saban, he would say the better team won.TigerNet transcribed the key portions of McFarland’s argument:“I’ve been listening to your show and I’ve kinda been a little disappointed – and here’s why. Everyone seems to say when Alabama loses, the kids aren’t focused,” McFarland said. “Mack Wilson is worried about winning the Butkus (Award). These players are concerned with their individual accolades. How about saying that Clemson was the better team and (Alabama) got beat. That’s the one thing that people who call into (Finebaum’s show) don’t say.“Sometimes there isn’t a reason or excuse and the other team is better…What about that the other team is just better? Dabo has done one hell of a job. And I was at the game, Paul, Clemson lined up and beat Alabama. It wasn’t a fluke. Tua (Tagovailoa) wasn’t sick and didn’t have the flu.“(Clemson) just lined up and beat Alabama and hit them square in the mouth and beat them. And I think that’s the thing that if you ask him, Nick Saban, he’ll tell you (that)…Let’s stop with the excuses. Alabama got beat by a better team that’s called the Clemson Tigers.”That does sound like what Saban would say, and it’s right. Alabama is an incredible program, but isn’t infallible, and isn’t the only one with players who have to deal with distractions.Clemson has been just as successful over the last few years, puts a comparable number of players into the NFL and has Alabama-level star power. Losses have been few and far between for the Crimson Tide over the last decade. That is what made this year’s national championship game so shocking. Obviously, Clemson was expected to put up a fight, but the 44-16 drubbing of ‘Bama was incredible. It hasn’t really put a damper on expectations for Alabama going forward. Danny Kanell Reacts To Florida State’s Loss On Saturday

Virginia outscored Florida State 21-7 in the final stanza.Kanell maintained a positive outlook despite the result.“It’s more of a reflection on my personality than anything. I choose to look at positives. Yes this team is killing themselves with foolish penalties. The offense needs to learn to control tempo as opposed to just going fast. But they fought and lost to the best team in Coastal,” he said. It’s more of a reflection on my personality than anything. I choose to look at positives. South Africa would have lost two wickets with no runs on the board had the decision to review been allowed.DRS rules state that the on-field umpire should give a prompt to the team or batsman reviewing against the on-field call after 10 seconds. But Aleem Dar simply failed to do that.Karunaratne’s signal for the DRS however, was within the 15 seconds, according to the TV broadcasters. Former West Indies fast bowler Michael Holding, who was on air at the time, slammed the umpire’s decision. “I have seen people take longer than that to review,” Holding said during his commentary stint. All this happened right after Vishwa Fernando had got the wicket of Proteas opener Dean Elgar for a duck off the fourth ball in the second over. Just one ball later a Fernando delivery wrapped Amla on the pads.advertisementSri Lanka’s bowlers made use of a helpful pitch to have South Africa struggling on 17 for 3 at one point before limping to lunch on 89 for 4 on the opening day.Left-arm quick Fernando took two wickets in his first spell – removing both openers Aiden Markram and Elgar – while Suranga Lakmal chipped in with the prize wicket of Amla to put South Africa’s top three batsmen back in the dressing room after only 7.4 overs of the series-opener at Kingsmead. The technology and the rules surrounding it have frequently come under the scanner with the most recent case being the controversial Daryl Mitchell dismissal during the second T20 international between New Zealand and India in Auckland when the batsman was given out after the snicko failed to pick up an inside-edge despite it being clearly visible in the TV replays. The batsman had to walk back to the pavillion on that occasion as he was given out by the on-field umpire while the third-umpire didn’t overturn the decision due to the snicko’s mistake. Also Read | South Africa vs Sri Lanka, 1st Test Day 1 in Durban: Live cricket scoreFor sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports.
