Toronto independent theatre battles back but the war isnt won

first_img Facebook Toronto’s real estate market continues to be the city’s favourite topic of conversation, between tenant protests over rent hikes in Parkdale, complaints about Airbnb rentals in Kensington Market and a Toronto Life cover story about a wealthy family renovating a former crack house. The conversation around who gets to live and work in downtown Toronto and for how much dominates our collective consciousness, which is something Toronto’s indie theatre community knows all too well. The past year has seen a major loss of independently run venues. OPEC members expected to agree cut in crude production

first_imgVIENNA — OPEC members are meeting to agree on their response to recent declines in oil prices, with analysts predicting a cut in production of at least 1 million barrels per day.Crude prices began falling in October and continued to plunge last month because of oversupply and fears weaker global economic growth would dampen energy demand. The price of both benchmark U.S. crude and the standard for internationally traded oil fell 22 per cent in November.Mohammed Hamad al-Rumhy, Oman’s oil and gas minister, said Wednesday of the production cut expected at Thursday’s meeting that “we haven’t discussed the numbers.”U.S. President Donald Trump tweeted Wednesday that “Hopefully OPEC will be keeping oil flows as is, not restricted. Maya targets PM on his marriage, BJP says she is unfit for public life

first_imgGorakhpur (UP): Unleashing a flurry of personal attacks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BSP supremo Mayawati on Monday said women in the BJP are scared of their husbands meeting the PM fearing they might “abandon their wives like him” and that he deserves the abusive language used against him.”How can he (Modi) respect others’ sisters and wives when he has left his own innocent wife for political gains?” Mayawati said in her no-holds-barred tirade which left the BJP fuming with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley saying the BSP chief is “unfit for public life”. Earlier in the day, Mayawati said, “I have come to know that in BJP, married women leaders get scared when they see their husbands in Modi’s close proximity. They fear that like Modi they might also abandon their wives.” “Under such circumstances, I specially request all the women of the country not to give their votes to such a person. This would also be their real respect to the deserted wife of Modiji,” she said in a press release. Slamming the BSP supremo for making personal remarks against the Prime Minister, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley tweeted: “Behan Mayawati – She is firm on becoming a Prime Minister. Her governance, ethics and discourse stoops to an all-time low. Her personal attack today on the Prime Minister exposes her as unfit for public life.” UP BJP spokesperson Chandra Mohan said “nothing can be more indecent than the statements made by her. The truth about Mayawati and her politics is coming out in front of everyone.” Mayawati also took a jibe at the Prime Minister for terming poverty as his caste during an election rally earlier last week, saying “he is changing his caste every second day for political selfish motives”. Terming the PM’s “affection” for dalits as “dramebazi”, she cited the various alleged cases of atrocities on dalits in Gujarat and other BJP ruled states and said Modi has no moral right to make any suggestion to anyone on the Alwar case.last_img read more

Over 20000 displaced Georgians return to villages in buffer zone – UN

17 October 2008More than 20,000 people displaced by the fighting that broke out in Georgia in late August have returned to their villages in the buffer zone around the breakaway region of South Ossetia over the past week, the United Nations refugee agency reported today. An estimated 192,000 people were uprooted from their homes in the Caucasus country by the conflict between forces from Georgia, Russia and South Ossetia. “Our teams monitoring the returns report that more than 20,000 people have headed back since the withdrawal of the Russian troops from the buffer zone on 8 October,” Ron Redmond, with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), told reporters in Geneva. “Most of these people are returning to their homes and villages in the buffer zone or checking to see if conditions are safe and acceptable. We are warning all of those going back to watch out for mines and unexploded ordnance. Some casualties have already been registered,” he added. The agency closed its tent camp in the town of Gori, south of South Ossetia, earlier this week after the last of the displaced left for their homes in the buffer zone, or were relocated to collective centres. UNHCR estimates that 78,000 out of the 133,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) within Georgia have returned to their homes across the country. Meanwhile, Russian authorities in North Ossetia report that fewer than 2,000 people remain there out of some 30,000 who fled from South Ossetia back in August.Returnees are being provided with tools and reconstruction materials to help them resettle in their villages. UNHCR is also working urgently to repair and rehabilitate collective centres and damaged houses for some 35,000 IDPs before the winter sets in. It is also distributing stoves and firewood, as well as additional blankets, mattresses, bed sheets and kitchen stoves.UNHCR teams are also planning to convert unused public buildings into apartments for some 5,000 people who cannot return to their homes in the long term.“We urgently need additional funds to ensure continued assistance, winterization and reconstruction programmes for the newly displaced population in the Caucasus region,” Mr. Redmond stressed, adding that the agency has only received 31 per cent of the nearly $45 million needed to provide protection, shelter and assistance for the next six months to the displaced. read more

Ohio State football seniors have plenty to play for in 2012

The Ohio State football team can’t play in a bowl game next year, but don’t tell the seniors on the team they have nothing to play for in their final season. Twenty-two senior Buckeyes will play their final game in Ohio Stadium next year and said they want to go out on a high note. After posting a 6-7 record in 2011, several seniors said they are looking for improvement and better results this season. Senior tight end Jake Stoneburner said the seniors have to make the most of their final campaign at OSU and are motivated by underachieving last fall. “We have to play to the best of our ability because we seniors only have eight games left in the ‘Shoe and then that’s it,” Stoneburner said. “We had a disappointing season last year, so we want to come out and prove we’re a better team and that last year was a fluke.” Going to a BCS or other high-profile bowl is out of the question in 2012 due to an NCAA-imposed bowl ban, so some players said the focus shifts to winning games. Senior punter Ben Buchanan said the bowl ban hasn’t changed his level of excitement for the upcoming season. “I know the bowl ban is probably on the back of everyone’s mind, but we seniors just want to go out and win 12 games, beat Michigan and all those great things that any Ohio State team would look for,” Buchanan said. “I know a lot of guys have personal goals, but our goal overall as a team is to pick up Ws.” The bowl ban, along with a reduction in scholarships, come as the consequences to an NCAA investigation that found that six players had received improper benefits in the form of tattoos in exchange for memorabilia. Of the six, former running back Daniel “Boom” Herron, former wide receiver DeVier Posey and former offensive tackle Mike Adams all moved on to the NFL this April. Former quarterback Terrelle Pryor, who often found himself at the center of the scrutiny following the scandal, departed the university prior to the 2011 season to pursue a career in the NFL. Linebacker Jordan Whiting also received a one-game suspension and has since transferred to Louisville. Former coach Jim Tressel was forced to resign in May of 2011 after it became clear that he had known about the violations and failed to report them, thereby knowingly playing ineligible players during the 2010 season. With the hiring of coach Urban Meyer, the seniors will play for their third coach in three seasons after 2011 head coach Luke Fickell was moved to defensive coordinator and linebackers coach this season. Etienne Sabino, senior linebacker, said he also appreciates Meyer’s honesty when analyzing and criticizing the players. “It puts you in an uncomfortable position, but I think it’s good because he sees how you perform under pressure. It shows how you can react,” Sabino said. “I’ve learned there is no gray area. They’re going to tell you what they think of you.” The seniors will start their final year with OSU at home against Miami (Ohio) Sept. 1. read more

Major parties losing support

first_img Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram Support for the country’s two major political parties, ruling Socialist PASOK and conservative New Democracy, has plummeted over the past month.A new opinion poll shows only one in five Greeks are happy with the government, less than one in 10 satisfied with the conservatives and half favouring a new coalition administration.According to the results of the survey, carried out by polling firm Public Issue earlier this month on behalf of Kathimerini, only 22 percent of Greeks think the government has done a good job in tackling the problems faced by their debt-ridden country, down by 9 percent, and only 8 percent are happy with ND’s role as the country’s main opposition party.Half of the respondents in the survey, which was carried out with a sample of 1,006 citizens, indicated that they would prefer some kind of coalition government.More than a third (35 percent) said they would prefer a two-party coalition while 15 percent said they would like to see an all-party government. Only 13 percent said they wanted a majority PASOK government and just 3 percent a majority ND administration. The same survey shows that if elections were held now, PASOK would garner 45 percent of the vote, only slightly down from 46.5 percent last month, with ND amassing 27 percent. But the popularity of Prime Minister George Papandreou, who has led the drive to impose a raft of austerity measures, fell to 53 percent, from 68 percent last month. The survey also noted an increase in support for left wing parties, and particularly for the Communist Party (KKE), which is seen garnering 10 percent of the vote if elections were held now. Some 6,000 KKE party members and supporters staged a rally in central Athens on Saturday to protest the government’s austerity measures.last_img read more

Verlander Astros Cant Soar into Another World Series

first_imgDavid J. Phillip/APHouston Astros starting pitcher Justin Verlander throws against the Boston Red Sox during the first inning in Game 5 of a baseball American League Championship Series on Thursday, Oct. 18, 2018, in Houston.Justin Verlander and the Houston Astros couldn’t soar into another World Series.A year after Houston won the first title in the team’s 56 seasons, Verlander had a rare off night in an elimination game and the Astros lost the AL Championship Series to the Boston Red Sox in five games.“This year’s team is better than last year’s team,” third baseman Alex Bregman said. “Everyone in here will have a little bit of an edge to play with, a chip on their shoulder knowing that we believe we should have been back-to-back champions.”Houston boosted its rotation with Gerrit Cole last winter and its bullpen with Roberto Osuna ahead of the July trade deadline. The Astros won a club-record 103 games, led the majors with a plus-263 run difference and swept Cleveland 3-0 in the Division Series. But after beating Boston in the opener, the banged-up Astros were outscored 27-14 in losing four in a row — one short of their season high. The major leagues remain without a repeat champion since the New York Yankees won three straight from 1998-2000.“The World Series is the only thing that was going to make this team feel like we accomplished much,” manager AJ Hinch said. “It’s a pretty hollow feeling when the season abruptly ends the way that it does and the way that it did.”Their season came to a close a day after the Astros were cleared of any wrongdoing by Major League Baseball after a credentialed Houston employee was caught pointing his cellphone toward opposing dugouts during playoff games in Cleveland and Boston.Verlander was last year’s Championship Series MVP with two wins against the New York Yankees, including seven scoreless innings to force a Game 7.The Game 1 winner this year, he entered 4-1 with a 1.21 ERA when starting potential elimination games with Detroit and Houston. He had pitched 26 scoreless innings in such situations before J.D. Martinez’s go-ahead solo home run in the third.“We had a good season. Didn’t end up where we wanted. We lost to a great team,” Verlander said. “I said it last year, playoffs, it’s kind of flip a coin sometimes. It’s whoever is playing the best baseball at the time. We were dealing with a ton of injuries as you could tell.”Verlander wasn’t the only Houston player who didn’t measure up to his 2017 form.Altuve, a six-time All-Star and last year’s AL MVP, went on the disabled list for the first time in July with right knee soreness. He never seemed healthy, banged the knee in the playoffs and was limited to a designated hitter in the last three games. He hit .250 in the series with two RBIs.“It’s not a secret that my knee was hurting pretty bad,” Altuve said. “But it’s something that I don’t have control of. It hurts and I couldn’t control being healthy. I feel really, really bad for not being on the field for my team but one thing you can know is that I gave everything I had, healthy, not healthy that was all I have.”Shortstop Carlos Correa dealt with back issues much of the second half of this season. While he had three hits and two RBIs in Game 4 — his only multi-hit game this postseason — he hit a relatively quiet .316 with three RBIs against the 108-win Red Sox.Right-hander Charlie Morton was a first-time All-Star and won 15 games, but he dealt with shoulder issues the second half of the season. Lance McCullers Jr., a 10-game winner, said he was pitching through some stuff like others while focused on trying to win a World Series, and indicated without being specific that his injury might require surgery.“The heart of this team, really kind of unparalleled. We had guys playing through so much,” Verlander said. “These guys could give nothing else to a man.”Morton is among the potential free agents for the Astros. That group also includes former Cy Young Award winner Dallas Keuchel, catchers Brian McCann and Martin Maldonado, and utility player Marwin Gonzalez. Sharelast_img read more

Copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bard to Be Auctioned Off

first_imgStay on target Toy Tuesday: The Best Animal ToysGrab Your Wand: ‘Harry Potter: Wizards Unite’ Launches June 21 If you have a few hundred thousand euros to spare and you love Harry Potter why not partake in an upcoming Sotheby’s auction?A rare, presentation copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bard–a book of children’s stories from the Potterverse–will be put up for auction at the Sotheby’s in London on Dec. 13. It’s one of only seven copies produced by J.K. Rowling herself and only given to people with personal significance to the author. And it can be yours for a low price of £300,000- 500,000, according to experts. In some relative terms, you can purchase the house that Harry grew up in or a children’s book for the same price. This particular copy–the third of the series produced–was given to publisher Barry Cunningham in 2007, who accepted and published the first book, essentially kicking off the literary phenomenon. It comes with an inscription to Cunningham and the original packaging he received it in.“To Barry, the man who thought an overlong novel about a boy wizard in glasses might just sell… THANK YOU,” the inscription says.We live in the real world so of course; there’s no magic (that we know of) but this version of The Tales of Beedle the Bard is still worth something. You can buy a mass-produced copy in bookstores, and get to know more about “The Tale of the Three Brothers,” or you can get this one, which features illustrations and writing by Rowling and is incredibly ornate. It’s wrapped in cloth, bound in leather, and ordained with several semi-precious stones, including moonstones, and a sterling silver skull. Rowling wrote that the stones were “traditionally associated with love, balance, and joy in daily life,” hence their choice.Versions of the book have gone for even more at auctions. One produced specifically for an auction to benefit The Children’s Voice, a charity Rowling set up, was bought by Amazon for £1.95 million. A spokesperson from the company said they purchased the book as a “thank you.”We could also go all-in with a crowdfunding effort. Who’s in?last_img read more

Brace Your Wallets for a 1000 iPhone 8

first_imgStay on target Apple Brings Contactless Student IDs to More UniversitiesCelebrate World Emoji Day With Diverse New Characters One of my favorite tweets on Twitter dot com, a den of Nazis also beloved by cool socialists and wrestling fans for some reason, says something like “some people are just begging to have their wealth redistributed.” Well it might be time to add a new group of people to that list: iPhone 8 owners.A full reveal of Apple’s latest smartphone should be coming in just a few weeks, but a New York Times report is already claiming the phone will put the “luxury” back in “luxury device” thanks to its premium $1,000 price tag.One. Thousand. Dollars. That’s how much Apple is allegedly charging for their new flagship phone. That’s more than $300 more expensive than the priciest iPhone available now. That’s more expensive than most iPads. Unapologetically pricey. $100 for every year of the iPhone’s existence. It costs more than its weight in rose gold, which might not even be an available color anymore. Think of all the headphone jacks you could buy for $1,000 dollars. Think of all the wireless AirPods you could lose and replace!via Nodus and Gordon KellySo what will that cool grand get you this fall? As we’ve mentioned in previous reports, the iPhone 8 will probably exist alongside cheaper, tweaked versions of the iPhone 7 (as well as the only remaining good iPhone the iPhone SE). It will have a larger Samsung Galaxy S8-esque bezel-free screen with a virtual home button, improved security and augmented reality functionality through face-scanning cameras, and wireless charging.Another juicy rumor is that Apple is purposefully raising the iPhone 8’s starting price to an absurd prohibitively expensive level in order to lower initial sales and make supply chain management easier. Let all the important rich people buy their iPhones first before making it accessible to the cheapskate proles. It’s an interesting strategy, if true. It plays into the long-standing culture of Apple products as elite status symbols, and status symbols are always just reflections of wealth, so make that explicit. Now you and everyone else can immediately monetarily quantify your Apple fandom. Cool! We’ll know the truth about the iPhone 8 or whatever it’s really called (iPhone Plutocrat Edition) soon enough, probably on September 12. But man that’s a steep price for a phone. Four figures. $1,000.One thousand dollars.Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey.last_img read more

Cyprus vaccination timetable is lagging

first_imgCyprus is failing to vaccinate children in a timely fashion despite high levels of coverage, the health ministry said on Friday. In a statement to mark World Immunization Week the ministry stressed the importance of timely vaccination of children and the need to complete all doses of vaccines according to the appropriate schedule.World Immunization Week is a global public health campaign to raise awareness and increase rates of immunisation against vaccine-preventable diseases around the world. It takes place each year during the last week of April. The goal of World Immunization Week 2018 is to urge greater action on immunisation around the world, with a particular focus on spotlighting the role that everyone can play in this effort, from donors to individuals. This year’s slogan is: “Protect yourselves and others. Vaccination is everyone’s responsibility”.The aim, the ministry said, is to stress that the risk of recurrence of infectious diseases and epidemics is present and that it is the duty and responsibility of parents, the medical community and the state to continue to vaccinate all children. In Cyprus, the health ministry said, citing its latest survey in 2015, vaccination coverage rates among children between 17 and 24-months of age, are high.“In particular, the percentage of children with the most basic vaccines such as diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis-poliomyelitis is 97 per cent and measles-mumps-rubella at 90 per cent,” the ministry said.At the same time, however, especially with regard to these vaccines, it has transpired that a percentage of children do not receive their vaccine in time, it said.It added that vaccination is one of the most effective public health interventions and is a valuable human ally against many serious illnesses such as diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, poliomyelitis, measles, mumps, meningococcal and pneumococcal infections, hepatitis, and other diseases that used to lead to disabilities or even death.Vaccines today, it said, are no longer limited to the prevention of infectious diseases, but also of other serious diseases such as cervical cancer, ‘a major factor in which is the human papillomavirus, which is significantly prevented by the vaccine’.In the context of the World Immunization Week various activities have been planned, such as presenting information for parents and children as well as health professionals on the value of vaccination through events in schools. It also includes conferences and the participation of specialists in radio and television broadcasts. You May LikeVitaminews15+ Surprising Foods That Naturally Unclog Arteries Like MagicVitaminewsUndoFood PreventThis Is What May Happen To Your Body When You Eat Oatmeal Every DayFood PreventUndoezzin.com20 Breathtaking Places to See Before You Dieezzin.comUndo Cypriot ambassadors gather in Nicosia for annual briefingUndoNew York state decriminalizes pot, stops short of Cuomo’s legalisation callUndoGreek Prime Minister in Cyprus for official visitUndoby Taboolaby Taboolalast_img read more
