Mumbai air hostess gangraped airline security officer arrested

first_imgGetty ImagesAn air hostess was allegedly gang-raped by a colleague and his roommates in Mumbai. The accused, 23-year-old Swapnil Kumar Bodiya, works with the security wing of the airline.According to reports, Swapnil took the victim to his rented apartment from a bar late on Tuesday. He then sexually assaulted her with his roommates. The victim, who had arrived from Hyderabad on Monday, had dropped her luggage at her house and met Swapnil at a mall in Malad. They later went to a bar there. The accused told the police that he drove the victim straight to his residence as she was not in a state to be able to reach her home. The next morning, according to the police, the victim spotted injury marks on her body and told her boyfriend and father about the ordeal she went through. Her father registered a police complaint after which the accused was arrested. She told the police that when she arrived at Swapnil’s residence, there were two men and a woman. The statement of Swapnil’s flatmates was also recorded after which the arrest was made.”Her father and boyfriend tried contacting her, but they did not get a response,” a police officer told Hindustan Times.  A demonstrator holds a placard as she attends a candlelight vigil to mark the first anniversary of Delhi gang rape, in New Delhi December 16, 2013.REUTERS/Anindito MukherjeeThe police have registered a case under sections 376-D (gang-rape) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code.Although Mumbai is regarded as a safer city for women as compared to the other metros like Delhi, a series of incidents of crimes against women have rattled the police authorities as well as social activists in the past few days.Venturing out at night for women has not been much of a problem unlike the national capital, but the alarming rate at which the crime in the city has increased particularly directed against women calls for tougher laws as well as better security measures in place.last_img read more

Hong Kong airport protesters retreat but city in chaos

first_imgPassengers wait in line at check-in counters at Hong Kong`s International Airport on 14 August 2019. Photo: AFPPro-democracy protesters retreated from Hong Kong’s airport on Wednesday following two days of hugely disruptive rallies that turned violent and plunged the global financial hub further into turmoil. The protests ended early Wednesday morning following a series of clashes in which a policeman drew his gun after being beaten by demonstrators and other officers fired pepper spray. The rallies paralysed one of the world’s busiest travel hubs, deepening a 10-week crisis that is the biggest challenge to Chinese rule of Hong Kong since its 1997 British handover.US president Donald Trump deepened fears Beijing may be prepared to stage a military intervention to end the unrest, saying on Tuesday his intelligence had confirmed Chinese troop movements toward the Hong Kong border. The unrest, which has seen millions of people take to Hong Kong’s streets, was sparked by opposition to a planned law that would have allowed extraditions to mainland China. But it quickly evolved into a much broader campaign for democratic freedoms, and to stop the growing influence of China’s authoritarian rulers in the semi-autonomous city.Suspicion, violence On Monday and Tuesday, thousands of protesters wearing their signature black T-shirts gathered at Hong Kong’s airport, forcing hundreds of flights to be cancelled. After initially just voicing their demands with peaceful demonstrations, the protesters adopted more aggressive tactics on Tuesday and created barricades with luggage trolleys to block passengers at the departure halls.Late on Tuesday night, the protests descended into a series of violent confrontations with police, and demonstrators scuffling with passengers desperate to get on flights. In one particularly ugly scene filmed by media, a group of protesters ganged up on a policeman and beat him. They stopped their attack when the policeman pulled his gun and pointed it at them, but did not fire.Demonstrators also turned on two men, fuelled by suspicions within their ranks about undercover police or spies. The first man was held for about two hours before eventually being led away in an ambulance. Riot police briefly deployed pepper spray and batons to beat back protesters while they escorted the vehicle away from the departures hall.Another man, wearing a yellow journalist vest, was surrounded, zip-tied and then beaten by a small group who accused him of being a spy.In a tweet, Hu Xijun, the editor of China’s state-controlled Global Times tabloid — which has vociferously condemned the protests — said the man was a journalist working for the paper.By early Wednesday, most protesters had left and many flights were operating as scheduled in the morning. However, it was unclear if the protesters, who have no public leaders and organise via social media, would return to the airport. The Airport Authority has obtained an injunction to remove demonstrators but enforcing it may prove difficult, as the hub is designed to make entry as fast and efficient as possible.Passengers can also arrive via bus, train and taxi, with each mode of transport having different entrances. The ‘abyss’ On Tuesday morning, the city’s leader, Carrie Lam, gave an at-times emotional press conference in which she warned of dangerous consequences if escalating violence was not curbed.”Take a minute to think, look at our city, our home, do you all really want to see it pushed into an abyss?” Lam said, although she again refused to make any concessions to the protesters. The Chinese government has repeatedly signalled the protesters are reaching the limits of the “one country, two systems” legal framework that gives Hong Kong its autonomy.Authorities in Beijing on Monday described some of the violence as “terrorism”, and state-run media this week began promoting videos showing security forces gathering in Shenzhen just across the border from Hong Kong.Trump on Tuesday said his intelligence had confirmed Chinese troops were gathering across the border.”I hope it works out for everybody including China. I hope it works out peacefully, nobody gets hurt, nobody gets killed,” he said. The United Nations’ human rights chief on Tuesday voiced concern over force used against protesters and called for an impartial probe. However, Trump has said little to support Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement, drawing criticism from both sides of the American political spectrum.”Trump favours both sides in Hong Kong protests. Hardly a profile in courage,” said Nicholas Burns, a former senior US diplomat now at the Harvard University Kennedy School.last_img

The first clinical installs will be completed at: Miami Baptist Hospital in Florida; University Hospital of Bichat in Paris, France; Queensland X-Ray at the Mater Hospital in Brisbane, Australia; Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina; and Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. The new PET/CT platform was built based on clinician needs for more power to explore the potential of PET/CT imaging that includes better PET quantitative accuracy, according to GE. This new line of PET/CT scanners, combine advanced molecular imaging tools with the large coverage low dose Volume CT helping allow for earlier diagnosis, more accurate tumor location and better assessment of how a patient is responding to cancer treatment. Although mostly for use in oncology, PET/CT can also be used for assisting the diagnosis of cardiovascular disease and neurological conditions. The new system leverages the high-speed, high-resolution capabilities of GE’s advanced CT, the LightSpeed VCT. Volume CT technology, with 40 mm of coverage, reduces CT acquisition times and CT dose. Static organs can be imaged in as little as one second, the lung in as little as two seconds and a whole body trauma could be performed in less than 10 seconds.GE’s next generation of MotionFree imaging technologies are introduced in the new Discovery 600 series PET/CT, giving clinicians detailed images even in areas of the body subject to movement caused by respiration. GE’s MotionFree imaging technologies are integrated with VUE Point FX, an advanced high-definition reconstruction technique. Combined, these technologies have the potential to improve small lesion detection, image quality, and better therapy response monitoring.By combining the LightSpeed VCT with the breakthrough motion management capabilities of the Discovery PET system, the new Discovery PET/CT platform provides the next evolution PET/CT system, bringing clinically-relevant innovations designed to open doors to new and advanced procedure possibilities in non-invasive diagnostic imaging. One prediction was overcrowded offices, resulting in longer waits for patient care. Yet instead of going up, wait times are actually coming down.Several factors could be contributing to the decrease. Alternative care facilities, like urgent care centers and retail clinics, could be taking the burden off primary care doctors. Physician extenders, like nurse practitioners and physician assistants, may also be easing doctor caseloads. Even the rise of concierge medicine can be diverting patients from traditional group practice care. In fact, wait times for primary care doctors, the doctors Americans see the most, were generally down more than one minute (1 minute, 11 seconds) in a year-over-year comparison.“It appears that the growth of supportive health services is increasing the overall efficiency of care for patients,” said Heyward Donigan, CEO of Vitals. “This is great news as more Americans receive health coverage and enter the system, post-reform.While wait times are decreasing overall, the study found wide variations by doctor specialty. Dentists (13 minutes, 31 seconds) and plastic surgeons (15 minutes, 22 seconds), whose patients often pay out-of-pocket, have the shortest wait times out of the 61 types of specialists Vitals analyzed. Emergency doctors (24 minutes, 41 seconds) and pain management specialists (24 minutes, 52 seconds) had some of the longest wait times.Beyond the type of doctor, where you see the doctor matters, too.  Out of the 50 largest cities across the United States, Portland edged out Seattle for the shortest wait time at 15 minutes, 48 seconds in 2015. Minneapolis, Seattle, Milwaukee and Omaha were also in the top 5. For the fourth year in a row, the longest wait time was reported in El Paso, Texas, at 26 minutes, 21 seconds. Memphis, Miami, New York and Las Vegas were also at the bottom of the ranking. For states, New Hampshire led the nation with the shortest wait time at 15 minutes, 4 seconds. The remaining top states with shortest physician wait times include Wisconsin, Maine, Minnesota and Vermont. Alabama edged out Mississippi this year as the state with the longest wait, averaging 23 minutes, 25 seconds. Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas and Tennessee were also in the bottom five.Vitals’ annual Physician Wait Time Report, now in its sixth year, is compiled from patient-reported wait times. This next-generation approach focuses on customer-centered vendor interoperability, rather than creating additional silos of large data prevalent in the “big bang” vendor neutral archive (VNA) realm. The company launched its ANA at the annual meeting of the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM), June 29 – July 1 in Portland, Ore.Vital’s ANA approach uses a sophisticated software toolset that facilitates advanced interoperability and workflow between existing healthcare informatics applications. The solution was specifically designed to address the semantic interoperability chasm between structured and unstructured datasets. The platform communicates with numerous sub-systems, such as enterprise content management (ECM), VNA and picture archiving and communication systems (PACS), in synchronicity with electronic medical records (EMR), health information exchanges (HIE) and many other healthcare information systems. ANA promotes a federated, real-time access to information model versus the “big bang” centralization focus of a typical VNA project.ANA provides semantic interoperability to all stakeholders in the healthcare enterprise, from providers to the myriad of EMR, ESB, VNA and other imaging and multimedia vendors. This enterprise-wide approach supports technology providers in their efforts to streamline workflow as healthcare organizations navigate the varied requirements of government regulations, accountable care, shared-saving programs, chronic disease management and bundled payments. For more information: www.vitalimages.com FacebookTwitterLinkedInPrint分享 Related Content Videos | Radiology Business | August 02, 2019 VIDEO: Key Topics for Radiology Administrators at AHRA 2019 Association for Medical Imaging Management (AHRA) President … read more Sponsored Content | Case Study | Radiation Dose Management | August 13, 2019 The Challenge of Pediatric Radiation Dose Management Radiation dose management is central to child patient safety. first_imgGo back to the e-newsletterIn June the wine programme at Triple Creek Ranch received a three-star award, the highest honour, from World of Fine Wine’s “World’s Best Wine Lists Awards”.  The Ranch has also received 10 consecutive Wine Spectator Awards of Excellence awards since 2005 and a yearly Best Of, Award of Excellence from the publication since 2012. Behind these accolades is Sommelier Jeremy White, who has been curating the wine selection at Triple Creek Ranch since 2009.How has the wine programme grown at Triple Creek Ranch since you became Sommelier in 2009?Our owners, Craig and Barbara Barrett, have provided me with an incredible platform. They’ve given me the opportunity and freedom to expand the wine cellar at Triple Creek Ranch. I’ve worked to increase both breadth and the vintage depth, which is starting to show now. Montana has also seen a huge shift in wine consumption since 2009, consumers are getting more interested and sophisticated and the distributors are starting to bring in serious wines. In large part, Triple Creek Ranch has been a driving force behind this by supporting boutique producers. We now have 2600 bottles and about 700 selections in our cellar. When you talk about increasing depth of the cellar, what have you been working on?Let’s take Pinot Noir, for example. We have a wide selection of Burgundies, but I’ve also added a greater selection of wines from the New World and focused more on the Northwest vintners. Many of our European guests don’t have access to Washington State and Oregon wines overseas.  Of course, Pinot Noirs also happen to go very well with Chef Jake Leatherman’s food. What are some of the notable strengths of the Triple Creek Ranch cellar?California Cabernets are king at Triple Creek Ranch, and the Pinots. In terms of regions, we are very strong in wines from California, the Pacific Northwest and France. What offerings might surprise a guest when they settle down to look at your list? The Rieslings. They’ve been called the “sommelier’s grape”, because sommeliers tend to get excited about them. They are so versatile yet many people just don’t know much about them. We have a quite a few from Germany, Austria and Alsace, but also from places you might not expect Riesling to be grown, such as Oregon and Australia. Are Triple Creek Ranch’s Vintner Events strictly for serious wine aficionados? Not at all. A certain percentage of the guests might know the vintner from a visit to the vineyard or their wine club, but many of our other guests come just to learn. It’s also important to remember that these are multi-day events, not tastings or just a weekend. At the Vintner Events, you’re not meeting a sales manager, you’re meeting the winemaker or the vineyard owner. You have access to them, to taste, talk and enjoy ranch activities alongside some of the country’s preeminent vintners. People like Cyril and Blakesley Chappellet of Chappellet Winery, who are really hands on. You will sometimes get to physically blend the wine from a producer like Et Fille Wines, a boutique winery from Oregon. With Merry Edwards, from California’s Russian River Valley, we’ve been able to do amazing tastings, like a flight of 10 vintages from her Meredith Estate Pinot Noir. The Vintner Events showcase the best of Triple Creek Ranch – enjoying great wine in a spectacular western setting. How would you sum up your attitude about wine?Classic wine makes the food better and the food makes the wine better — if you do it properly! It’s all about synergy, which is a very powerful thing and enhances the entire dining experience.Go back to the e-newsletterlast_img read more
